Puppy Training – How To Potty Train A PUPPY In 5 Minutes!

How to potty train your puppy at home? House training your puppy takes time and management. In this puppy training video, Tom Davis gives you 5 Tips to potty train your new puppy!

A lot of the puppies that I work with are paid through verbal cues. However, one important thing I try to tell my clients is, if your dog is already depending on food or is already working for food in a really enthusiastic way, I do not want to suppress any of that. I encourage people to work with their dog in a very low-stress or no-stress way. So, if your dog is working for food, or if you continue to work with food, I want to keep the enthusiasm.

So what you want to do is give positive reinforcement with verbal cues and then add in the food as the cherry on top every other time, or every third time or fourth time. This will enforce the behavior, to say hey good job, but making sure that the dog will do it without the currency. Because once they are dependent on the food, you’re actually not teaching the dog anything.

So ask yourself, if you’re working with the trainer or you’re training by yourself, will your dog actually do the behavior if you don’t have the reinforcement involved? If you do not have a treat, will your dog actually listen to your command? If they will, great your dog knows the behavior, and if they won’t, then that means you need to restructure some things.

  1. Thank you for a simple, straightforward instructional video. I wish more people could see your simple, no nonsense approach!

  2. We got a puppy that was from an accidental litter. Well needless to say the owner let them pee and poop in the house. In a room that should have been his living room. I felt bad for the mother dog she was so skinny and looked beaten from the puppies. He was next to the tiniest puppy in the littler. He seems to have food aggression also. I know this puppy has the potential to be a good dog. I only wish I had the $2000 for a professional trainer. I would be thrilled if he could catch on to potty training. It seems the minute my husband is to be watching him he pees in the house. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

  3. I’m doing clicker training, however for pottying should i click AND give verbal praise after success or just click? Great video by the way

  4. This is probably an old video, but I have a bottle fed puppy who was never with his mother because the mother was trying to unalive the puppies. I feel like I’m having a harder time potty training him. He’s a Cane Corso/German Shepherd mix. I also have a 8 month old mini dachshund/Shih Tzu mix. She’s got the potty thing down to go outside mostly, but pooping is a whole other story. I so need help lol. I’m nervous about raising these two together with their size differences. They do nothing but play. I’m just scared when my Cane Corso/German Shepherd mix gets bigger that he’ll accidentally hurt my little dog. I’m on disability so a very low fixed income. I could so use a free virtual training session lol. God Bless!!
